I had planned to buy a Sony PS3 some time early in the 2010, but for some reason, I had been holding off.  I stopped playing video games a few years ago, and my Nintendo Wii had been sitting in a box during two of my past four residences. (This weekend I will be moving for the 4th time in a year and a half.) So I sold my Wii to my wife’s aunt, won $100 at the office Super Bowl Squares, and decided that I would use those funds to buy a PS3–for the Blu-Ray player capabilities of course.

In prior posts, I’ve mentioned how I’ve been weirdly holding off on high definition home video while I’m an HD snob for TV and sports.  Well, since we’re moving into a new house this weekend, and because I have to take off work to wait for the gas to be turned on this Friday, I figured I’d go ahead and get the PS3 and rent some Blu-Rays.

Unfortunately, the PS3 is nowhere to be found. Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, Gamestop, and Toys”R”Us are all either sold out or backordered.  When I check Amazon.com, it appears to be available, but instead of the normal $299.99, they’re selling it for $365.95.

What?

Why would I pay an extra $65 for something that I know should cost only $299.99? I don’t understand what’s going on. Is this simply a shortage due to the price drop when the PS3 Slim came out? I doubt it because that happened over 6 months ago. Is Sony planning a PS3 update, so they stopped supply of the PS3 Slims? Maybe, but I just watched a PS3 presentation at the Gamer Developer Conference, and all they talked about was the new Playstation Move, motion control remote (basically a glorified Wii Remote).

I’ve looked all over the internet, and I see no news at to why there is a shortage. All I want to do is watch Blu-Ray movies on Friday. Should I scour the city for a PS3, or is Sony going to drop the price and release a new one in April?

Conundrum.
